Kit for Dogs
Leashes, grooming tools and toys that survived a household with two strong dogs in it. Everything on this page was bought with our own money and used at home first — and the things that didn't last never made it here.
Only if the difference is small. Two dogs on one handle means their pull combines, so a much stronger dog effectively decides where you're going and you have less control over both.
As a rule of thumb: similar size, similar pace, and neither one lunging hard at other dogs or bikes. If one of yours is a puller and the other isn't, two separate leads give you far more control, and that's worth more than the convenience of one handle.
It runs at 69 dBA maximum. Household vacuums sit around 75–80, so it's noticeably quieter, but it isn't silent and almost no dog likes it on the first attempt.
What decides it is the introduction, not the decibels. Let them investigate it switched off. Run it in the same room for a minute without touching them. Then short sessions along the back, where dogs are least defensive, on the lowest of the three speeds.
Most dogs settle within a week. If yours is genuinely sound-phobic, a deshedding rake does the same job on the coat — it just doesn't catch the hair.
On pale nails you can see the pink quick through the nail. On black nails you can't, which is why so many people give up.
The trick is to take a little off and look at the cut end each time. As you get close, a small grey or pale circle appears in the centre of the tip. That's the edge of the quick — stop there.
Short and often beats long and rare. A few seconds per nail once a week keeps the quick receding, which is what eventually lets you get them properly short.
If you do catch it, it bleeds and it stings but it isn't dangerous. Press a clean cloth on it for a couple of minutes, or use styptic powder if you have it.
Honestly: none of them are chew-proof, and anything sold as indestructible is overselling it.
The bouncing ball uses TPU, which is tough and holds up to normal play, but it has a battery inside — so it's a toy for supervised sessions, not something to leave a determined dog alone with for an afternoon. Check the shell for cracks before each use and retire it the moment the surface is broken.
If your dog destroys everything within a day, an electronic toy isn't the right category. A solid rubber chew with no electronics in it is the safer buy, and we'd rather tell you that than sell you something that lasts a weekend.
It depends on the coat, and most advice ignores that.
A short single coat — a staffie, a boxer, a labrador — sheds steadily all year and does well with a rubber mitt or a short-bristle brush once or twice a week. A double coat with a dense undercoat needs an undercoat rake, daily during the spring and autumn moult and once or twice a week the rest of the time.
More isn't automatically better. Brushing the same spot for twenty minutes because hair keeps coming means you've moved from dead coat to live coat. Watch for pink skin or flinching and stop there.
And if the shedding changes suddenly, or you find bald patches, flaky skin or scratching, that's a vet visit rather than a brushing problem.
Dogs are hard on their things. Leads get yanked, toys get destroyed in an afternoon, and brushes get abandoned halfway through because the dog has decided it's had enough.
