It runs when they arrive

Cats drink more from moving water than from a still bowl — it's an instinct about stagnant water that never went away. The problem with most fountains is the cable: the bowl has to live wherever a socket is.

This one runs off a 5000 mAh battery, so it goes where your cat actually drinks. A 120° infrared sensor picks them up within about two metres and starts the water.

Three modes

• Sensor mode — runs when your pet approaches, stops when they leave.
• Timed mode — 15 seconds of water every 15 minutes.
• Continuous mode — constant flow, available while it's plugged in.

Why it's worth the bother

Most cats drink less than they should, and low water intake is linked to urinary and kidney problems, which are among the most common reasons cats end up at the vet. A fountain isn't a treatment for anything — but it is one of the few easy ways to nudge daily intake up.

If your cat is drinking noticeably more or less than usual, that's a vet conversation, not a fountain one.

Living with it

Put it away from the food bowl and away from the litter tray. Cats avoid drinking next to either, which is why a water bowl beside the food often goes untouched.

Change the water every couple of days and rinse the bowl properly. Any fountain builds a film if it's left.
