It plays when you can't

Most cat toys need a human on the other end. This one doesn't. Switch it on and it drives itself around the room, trailing a feather teaser behind it, turning away whenever it meets a wall or a chair leg.

The unpredictability is what holds a cat's attention. There's no pattern to learn and get bored of.

What it does

Where it works best

Hard floors. On thick carpet or a deep-pile rug, small wheeled toys bog down and stop.

Clear a bit of space before you set it going — an open room beats an obstacle course, and the battery lasts longer when it isn't fighting a rug.

Honest limits

It's a supplement to playing with your cat, not a replacement. Cats engage most with something a person is moving, and no automatic toy matches that.

Supervise the first few sessions. A determined cat will try to pull the feather off, and anything that comes loose is a swallowing risk. Check it regularly and replace the toy when it's chewed through.

Some cats are wary of self-moving objects for a day or two. Let them watch it from a distance before you expect them to chase it.
